I work from home + spend many days either in my 'pajamas' (yoga pants + a t-shirt) or just throwing on a pair of jeans + a t-shirt because it is quick + easy. But, I decided that I wanted to 2011 to be different and so I made a commitment to myself that as of the New Year, I would start embracing my own style more days of the week. That means putting in just a tiny bit of effort every day to actually get dressed. My main problem now, is that I keep selecting the same pieces + putting together the same outfits day after day.

Clearly, I still have much to learn...

So, I soak up every bit of fashion knowledge that is throw my way lately. Blogs, interviews, books, magazines, etc... And I take away bits + pieces from each thing I come across that work for me. Ever so slowly, my style is evolving + ever so slowly, I am learning what works for me.

Hope for Haiti

It has been a year since the earthquake destroyed Haiti and I can still see clearly i my mind the images of the devastation. When I think back to the horrors the Haitian people endured and the losses so many suffered...my heart breaks. And yet, as difficult as it is to imagine, life somehow continues on. They, we all, move forward...babies are born, people fall in love, art is created. What is destroyed can be built again...

"Community" | The Christmas Episode

My husband and I have been watching "Community" since its premier earlier this year. Though it hit a couple of rocky notes for me midway through the first half of the season, overall we both have come to love it + look forward to tuning in every week. Needless to say, I was super excited to get an advance copy of this week's episode to review!

I grew up on stop animation, clay-mation movies during the holidays...watching Rudolph as a family remains one of my most treasured holiday memories growing up. And despite my reluctance, I totally loved "Community"'s take on the concept.

The episode centers around Abed's obsession with finding the meaning of Christmas and his journey becomes something of concern to the entire group. The resulting journey is filled with notes of humor, wit and even some tenderness. They managed to convey the nostalgia of the medium, while also retaining the sarcastic humor that defines the series. And as an added bonus? They also managed to share the spirit of the holiday season without being too...well...cheesy

Norah Jones | ...Featuring

Norah Jones' first album, Come Away With Me, debuted the same year I met my husband. And so, her melodies and unmistakable voice always trigger something nostalgic in me. Her newest release, ...Featuring, is a beautiful mix up of her performances with other artists. Some of which are her songs featuring other artists, some of which are other artists' songs featuring her. The track listing is 18 songs long and highlights a variety spanning her entire career, including the musical talents of Willie Nelson, Ryan Adams, Outkast, Belle and Sebastian and many...many more.

Norah says about the album..."A lot of the people on this record are people I've worshiped since I was a kid, and some of them are younger and more my contemporaries. Even though the musicians are so varied, the vibe of the songs makes sense when we put them all together." And I couldn't agree more with her last statement. As I first listened to it, I was struck by the discordance of songs and yet at the same time it all felt right.

As I worked, her album played in the background and I found it both inspiring and calming...Norah working her magic as she poured herself into each note, each collaboration. The result is a spectacularly soulful compilation of songs, each carrying a different perspective on her talents. This is an album that has made its way into a top spot on my album list and I find myself selecting it as the one to listen to more often than not.

I can't lie...as a photographer, I typically design my own holiday cards each year + many for my clients as well. However...the new designs at Shutterfly are definitely worthy of a look in my opinion. They have a wide selection of beautiful holiday cards, but they also carry so much more including wonderful business Christmas cards and personalized thank you cards, all of which can be utilized to best fit your needs. There are just so many possibilites!

Sophisticated, clean + modern, I think that their cards are a wonderful choice for displaying your images if custom designs are not an option. They are meant to showcase beautiful photographs and the variety is astounding...it is highly unlikely that you won't find something on their site that you will just adore.

The designs range from incredibly simple to traditional to elaborate. My favorites include an folded 5x7 card in aqua blue and red featuring three images, a flat 5x7 design showcasing one image with a colorful overlay of holiday wishes + a flat 5x7 card that includes space for a family update and includes room for three smaller images. All different designs, each beautiful on its own.

Olivia

Olivia is 6 3/4 years old, but that doesn't stop my 3 year olds from being utterly fascinated with her every time she appears on our television screen. They love to follow along with her on adventures and watch as she navigates sometimes murky waters.

When the box from Team Mom arrived, they helped me tear into it and were thrilled to discover that nestled inside were both a plush Oliva and 2 in 1 play set. That very day, one of my girls adopted big Oliva and the other adopted little Olivia and my son, well, he adopted the entire play set. They walked around with them for a week straight, until they realized that they were here to stay, at which point they decided that it was perfectly acceptable to play with other toys and limit Olivia play for to only half of the day.

To say they loved the toys is an understatement. And what a fabulous idea. The play set opens on one side to feature Olivia's home and when you flip it over the other side opens to a pirate ship. Each comes equipped with accessories to aid in the imaginative play and my only complaint is that those pieces are small.

American Public University

I never completed my college degree...I have several semesters worth of credits, at least three years worth, and nothing to show for them. I attended three different schools during my pursuit of my bachelors degree and not one of them truly fit my needs. The closest was a junior college that allowed me to telecommute to my classes, but even the few courses offered in that format still required physical attendance. I wasn't great on my follow through in everything that pertained to school, but when it came time to physically go to class, that is where I struggled the most. I was a very young single mom, living with my parents and raising my daughter, and attending a traditional campus atmosphere wasn't something that I enjoyed. Or fit into, for that matter.

That is why I really appreciate the value of a school that offers a full online format...it really allows the space for a non-traditional student to excel. The flexibility of scheduling, the opportunity to pursue a variety of degrees and the chance to change career paths...all enormously important to anyone attending college, but especially so to a non-traditional student. Unlike the traditional mortar and brick structure of a traditional university, American Public University offers classes on a monthly basis (rather than semester), with accelerated programs that allow their students to obtain their degrees while still meeting the demands of work and home life.

APU offers more than 100 quality, accredited degree and certificate programs ranging from homeland security to management to liberal arts. Avacado

I adore avocado...chopped in a salad, sliced on a sandwich, mashed into guacamole or even just scooped out of the skin on its own. I love to eat the creamy, almost buttery, yumminess called an avocado.

My favorite way, by far, however is to toss the avocado with chunks of garden tomatoes (yes, homegrown...there is nothing like a homegrown tomato, of which they are bountiful come summertime in Illinois) thinly sliced red onion, olive oil, a bit of vinegar, salt and pepper, a little bit of lime juice and some toasted cumin. With a hunk of whole grain bread or just on its own, It is the freshest way to enjoy an avocado.

Avocados are packed full of nutrients and rich in healthy fats. Each serving, about one fifth of an avocado, contains nearly 20 vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients (which is a fancy way of saying nutrients derived from plants). Some of the many benefits to you, include their antioxidant properties, assistance in helping enhance the body's immune system, as well as promoting skin health and tissue repair.

Moon Dough

My kids love to play with anything they can mold, such as clay or play dough. The only problem is that it dries out quickly and becomes more difficult to work with. We end up pulling it out for activity time and discovering that it has hardened into an unmovable object. Not so much fun...for them or for me when the tears ensue.

Moon Dough is a brand new molding compound that does't dry out. Ever. It is incredibly soft, seriously the stuff feels like marshmallows, easily moldable and perfect for little hands to sculpt into their own creations. Plus, and a big bonus here for many families, it is hypo-allergenic and wheat-free. My only complaint is that it falls apart easily and sticks to nearly every surface almost like styrofoam. But, a plus is that it is super easy to pick up with a little ball of Moon Dough and it is even easier to clean up!

There are several play sets to choose from...a barnyard (which my kids adore), a pizza shop and a doghouse just to name a few. They all come with packs of Moon Douhg, but it can also be purchased in refill packs as well. Gatorade | Beat the Heat

I was an athlete growing up. Though my career was cut short, partly due to injury and partly due to my own short sightedness, I do know the importance of proper hydration. Not only to replenish lost fluids, to keep your body in optimal shape to ensure your highest level of performance, but to help prevent heat related illnesses as well. My daughter is a volleyball player, entering her Freshman year of high school, and her coaches have stressed since day one how important it is to drink plenty of fluids during these long, hot August practices.

Heat related illnesses can be caused by many different factos, but dehydration is a leading cause. When your body is dehydrated, it makes it difficult to function properly and performance declines. Water is incredibly important, but it doesn't always provide athletes with enough hydration as effectively as Gatorade. Gatorade supplies the body with not only fluid, but with electrolytes and carbohydrates which quickly replenish and refuel what athletes lose in sweat. It also provides energy to keep them going.

Other factors to keep in mind to prevent dehydration and heat illness in young athletes include regular breaks + unrestricted access to hydration before, during and after practices and games, as well as wearing the proper equipment (ie: light net-type jerseys, t-shirts and shorts, avoiding excess clothing, etc...) The digene HPV test

I have a very dear friend who was recently diagnosed with cervical cancer. She went from going about her normal everyday family life, working at a job she loves, going to graduate school and spending time with her husband and children, to undergoing treatment for cancer. After a radical hysterectomy and months of chemotherapy and radiation, she is finally finished with her treatment. But, the side effects linger, making her feel exhausted and sick. And it has certainly taken an emotional toll on her as well. She is strong, so she pushes forward continuing to do many of the things at the same pace she did before. But...it has taken its toll and she still has some recovery time ahead of her. Not to mention the follow up appointments throughout the coming years.

Her cancer was discovered during an regular check up from abnormal results from her Pap test. Which is why annual visits to your doctor are extremely important. She could have gone undiagnosed for years and faced a much graver prognosis.

There is now a vaccine, given to girls ages 9-26, that helps protect women against HPV, which is one of the most common causes of cervical cancer. But there are also tools for women over the age of 30 now as well. Along with your annual Pap there is a test that can be done at the same time, the digene HPV test, that will help identify your risk for developing cervical cancer. However, it isn't something that your doctor will automatically use, so be sure to request it.

Shred Sled

As my daughter far too quickly grows closer to the age where she will be leaving the nest for college and eventually for good, I find that it is incredibly important to keep encouraging her to play. She begins high school, her Freshman year, next week and I only hope that her ability to embrace the part of her that is still a child and enjoy life continues throughout the next four years and beyond. I have noticed that if I pull out or bring home a toy that is novel and/or interesting, it makes it so much easier for her, for all of us really, to let go of shoulds and should nots and just have fun. It had been a while since I introduced a new toy/game, so the timing on the arrival of the Shred Sled was perfect.

The Shred Sled is very similar to a skateboard, but it really is an entirely different piece of equipment. I can ride a skateboard...the Shred Sled gave me a run for my money. (I should note here, that once we figured out how to get on the board, Lydia picked up on how to use it in about 1.5 seconds.) There are four inline wheels and two decks, rather than the standard one on a skateboard, with a flexible connector in between that allows the boards to rotate around both the vertical and horizontal axes, making the Shred Sled easier to maneuver. Each deck also has a rough grip surface to maximize traction and stability. The movements used to propel it are similar to ones used for surfboards and snowboard, using hips and arms and legs to move it forward, rather than pushing off the board with your feet.

Lydia and I laughed so hard, our sides ached, as we attempted to master simply getting on the board. The recommendation is to hold onto a wall to steady yourself as you attempt to ride it. It is so unlike anything I have ever used before, that I couldn't even hold my balance long enough to do that at first. But once I figured out how to get on the board and what movements propelled the board forward, I kind of, ever so slightly figured out how to maneuver it. You have to twist your hips and both legs to keep it moving forward, which is so contrary to my body and mind who are stuck on a skateboard and wanting to push off with my foot. Lydia on the other hand, was riding back and forth through our hallway in no time.

The Shred Sled is available in three colors (red, black or blue), it has 4 x 80 mm polyurethane wheels and ABEC-5 bearings, both of which are smoother and stronger than standard hardware and both of which rarely need replacing. And, the boards aluminum casters far surpass the quality of older boards' metal casters which often rusted. The Shred Sled is appropriate for ages 8 and up. Waterpik

We have needed a new shower head on our bathroom for quite a while now. In fact, we even bought an inexpensive, standard one at the store a few months ago. It just hasn't been installed yet because it requires using sealing putty and though it isn't complex to install, it certainly isn't easy. So the shower head sat, still sits in fact, on my nightstand waiting to be used.

Cue stage right...and enter WaterPik to save the day...

It arrived sleek and shiny, begging to be installed as soon as I opened the box. Thankfully, the installation was easy...even easier than getting the thing out of its packaging. Seriously, it was a piece of cake to install and no sealing putty or tape was necessary.

The Waterpik EasySelect 5, is designed for ease of use. There is a spray selector on the removable handle featuring five different spray modes. And, all Water Pik showerheads are designed using their patented OptiFLOW technology, to maximize water pressure by increasing water force by up to 30%!

I remember when Lilith Fair first toured the country, I was 20 years old, I had a one year old daughter and I lived with my parents. I missed out on the experience of leaving home to attend college and so I lived through the music I listened to; and at the time my playlist was filled with female artists.

I really, really, really wanted to go…to celebrate being a woman, to enjoy beautiful music, to be with friends.

Sadly, attending didn't fit into my budget or my schedule, and each of the subsequent years only increased the un-liklihood that I would be able to attend. And then the tour stopped. Life moved on and I forgot about those 'when I was younger' dreams of one day going. Then last week, when I was given the opportunity to not only attend the concert, but to photograph the artists' performances as well.

The day was hot and incredibly humid, the sun shining bright without the relief of any clouds to hide behind. My husband and I wandered around, sipping water out of the fountains and taking in the chaos of varied concert-goers and sponsor tents. Sweat dripping, I headed off to find the bathroom and with an enormous thank you to Lilipad, created by the makers of STAYFREE® pads, CAREFREE® liners and o.b.® tampons, I finally found an oasis.

I walked through the doors and instead of the expected concrete floors and walls and smothering heat, I found a soft faux astro-turf floor and an incredibly cooler climate. Everywhere were displays of freebies...cold, wet towels to wipe the sweat off your brow and cool your core body temperature to a more manageable degree, makeup remover for the inevitable running mascara and smudged eyeliner, toothbrushes as well as ob tampons and Carefree pantyliners. I knew that Lilith Fair | Chicago was going to be sporting more upscale bathrooms than one would typically find at a concert, but these felt way more luxurious than I expected.

There was also a climate controlled Lilipad tent set up that offered plenty more freebies, including a special edition Self magazine featuring interviews with the artists participating in Lilith Fair and a full, fresh towel bar featuring a variety of the scented and unscented cool, wet towels. They even had a photo booth where concert-goers could take photographs as if appearing onstage with their favorite musicians! And I must say that the Lilipad tent was a very popular place to be, because both times I visited it, there were so many people there I could barely turn around.

As far as the music itself...it was powerful, the performances moving and the musicians enormously talented. There were several artists on two side stages prior to the start of the performances on the main stage. I was only able to catch Meaghan Smith, but she was so much fun to watch perform. Her music was new to me, but I loved it. She is retro with a modern twist…many of her songs well woven tales of past loves (complete with back stories), set to beautiful melodies played out on the guitar.

Once the performances on the main stage began, we headed to our seats and for the first three songs of each artist's set, I was able to be right at the foor of the stage to photograph the performances. Kate Nash opened the main stage performances and rocked it hard with a punk edge. Courtyard Hound followed and in contrast they played softer tunes, strumming expertly on the varied string instruments (banjo, violin, guitars...). Heart was up next and played their classic hits with such vibrancy and unrivaled energy as they danced across the stage and the lyrics. Mary J. Blige came out ready to have fun and surprised me as she poured her heart out onto the stage, tears falling from her face during her performance of No More Drama which followed her incredible covers of U2's One and Led Zepplin's Stairway to Heaven. Sarah Maclachlan closed out the performance beginning with two of her greatest hits, Angel and Building a Mystery were powerful and moving, haunting and beautiful all at once. She also peppered her set list with some of her newer material.

The music was diverse and as a result, the crowd that filled the amphitheater was varied...women and men, younger and older, gay and straight. The uniting factor of all those who performed was that they were all women who had pursued their dreams to share what they loved with the world. And their passion came through in waves of powerful emotion. I left the concert inspired...partially because I was able to experience such an amazing even and partially because I was able to photograph beautiful artists as they poured themselves onto the stage and into the audience. I left the concert ready to take on my own dreams, once and for all making them come true.

Pop On Pals

Pop on Pals arrived on our doorstep the very day my youngest three turned three. They were thrilled to get an early 'present' in the middle of the afternoon and I literally could not pull them away from the Amusement Park Playset after they tore it open. They had so much fun playing with the roller coaster and ferris wheel, that the only complaint I have is that the set doesn't come with more than one Pop on Pal.

The Pop on Pals design is incredibly smart; they are small, which is perfect for developing fine motor skills You simply press down on the pal and pop on any of the mix and match rings to change the look and each change produces the signature 'pop' to make it even more fun. There are so many different characters to choose from and they can be put together to become anything that little ones want to create, which fosters wonderful imaginative play. Breyers Smooth + Dreamy ice cream is double churned so that it is light and creamy, fat-free and made with no added sugar. And it tastes heavenly. Even better? Underwriters Laboratories | Summer Play + Pool Safety

Summertime means more time outdoors...more time in the backyard, more time grilling out, more time spent climbing jungle gyms and more time in swimming pools of all sizes.

But, along with the extra days of fun, comes extra concerns for safety. Each year, more than 200,000 children ages 14 and younger go to the emergency room for play set-related injuries and approximately 4,200 people go to the emergency room every year due to pool or spa-related injuries. That is why Underwriters Laboratories has compiled a well thought out checklist, full of safety tips to help all of us remember what needs to be done to best avoid injury during the long, hot summer days of fun.

In your own backyard, installing playground equipment...

Make sure your backyard is large enough for playground equipment. The site must also provide good visibility and security. Before setting up equipment, look out for obstacles, such as the garage, tree branches, utility poles and wires.
Read and follow the manufacturer’s directions when setting up play set equipment. Be sure your child's weight and age fall within the manufacturer's recommended limits for the equipment.
Install protective surfacing, such as rubber tiles or mulch under the play set, at least six feed in all directions, to prevent serious injuries should a child fall.

Before heading out to play, in your backyard or in the big, wide world…

Carefully inspect backyard playground equipment. Make sure equipment is anchored safely in the ground, all equipment pieces are in good working order, S-hooks are entirely closed and bolts are not protruding.
Check for spaces that could trap children, such as openings in guardrails or between ladder rungs. These spaces should measure less than 3.5 inches or more than 9 inches.
Always supervise children on play set equipment to make sure they are playing safely.
Never attach ropes, jump ropes, clotheslines, pet leashes or cords of any kind to play set equipment. If used improperly, they can be potential strangulation hazards.
Watch for potential trip hazards, such as rocks, tree stumps and concrete footings. Makesure you’re children are aware of them as well.
Do a sandbox check. Before letting your child dig in, rake through the sand to check for debris or sharp objects. Also, inspect for any animal contamination or insect problems.

Pool safety at home...

If you have a pool at home, install a fence. The fence should be at least four feet high and have a self-closing, self-latching gate that has a locking mechanism beyond a child's reach.
Cut overhanging tree limbs and remove chairs or ladders from the pool area to prevent children from climbing over the fence that surrounds the pool.
Keep grates and drain covers in good repair and secured in place. Alert your family and guests to stay away from these devices, as the suction from drain outlets can be strong enough to cause entrapment of hair or body parts, which can potentially cause a person to drown.
Make sure you know infant and child CPR if you own a pool.

Pool safety while swimming...

Supervision is a must. Follow the 10/20 rule when you’re at the pool. The 10/20 rule states the supervising adult needs to position themselves to be able to scan the pool every 10 seconds, and reach the water within 20 seconds.
Always have rescue devices, such as UL-LISTED life preservers, nearby.
Flotation devices, toys and inflatable swimming aids are not safety devices. They are toys and can easily puncture and deflate.
Always drain wading pools after children are done playing. Infants can drown in just a few inches of water.
Have a telephone nearby and appropriate emergency numbers posted.
Remove all toys when you leave the pool. Toys may attract children to the unattended

Hot dogs are a summer staple in our family...

I have friends who won't touch them, but my family enjoys them quite a bit...especially in the summertime. A little bit charred off the grill at a backyard cookout or at a baseball game (Go Cubs!) is our favorite way to enjoy them. I do, however, have concerns that we are not getting the best quality product with hotdogs and struggle with which brand to buy; who has the least preservatives, who uses the best quality meats, etc...

But recently I was introduced to a company that launched a line of sausages and hot dogs that are made fresh, never frozen, premium cuts and no artificial ingredients or preservatives. Sex and the City 2 | The Soundtrack

You all know by now, just how much I adore music.

So...even though I haven't seen a single episode of Sex and the City or the first movie, when asked to review the album for Sex and the City 2 I was pretty darn excited!

The artists featured on this soundtrack are just incredible...a duet by Jennifer Hudson and Leona Lewis, new tracks from both Dido and CeeLo, Liza Minelli covering Beyonce's hit 'Single Ladies' and Alicia Keys spin on the Blondie classic 'Rapture'. Plus, it features 'I Am Woman' as performed by the stars of Sex and the City 2, Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Kristin Davis and Cynthia Nixon!

The album is seriously overflowing with talent and oozing with, well, sex appeal. Seriously...beautiful. After listening to it, I am considering renting the entire series, the first movie and catching up quickly!

Oh my, how the six of us love Noodles & Company.

(Okay, only five of us love it, but to be fair the one who doesn't love it doesn't love much aside from peanut butter crackers...)

There is just so much variety on the menu, from Asian influenced dishes to Mediterranean fare to good old American flavors, every single one of us can find what we are craving. Plus, as an added bonus, almost every one of the items on their menu incorporates some kind of vegetable into it. So...we all get to eat what we want + we eat a healthy, balance meal...all in one spot. Do you know how difficult that can be with a family of six?

Noodles & Company's newest dish Asparagus + Lemon Linguine, is perfect for summer. With mushrooms, feta and a tiny bit of heat it pairs perfectly with their shrimp. And the dish is light but filling, flavorful but not full of fat. It is a wonderful way to at least introduce a new vegetable in a fun way.

Even if your pickiest eater won't even touch the plate...

I love music.

I don't know much about it, I don't have a background in music, I often find bands or artists I love based on a recommendation from others. I don't listen to my albums as often as I should, really. But, I do love music.

And so, anytime there is an offer to review an album I jump at the chance. Even if it is for something outside of the normal genres I listen to. Because, like I said, I love music. And though I have my favorites, I don't really discriminate. In my playlist you will find a little taste of just about everything out there...from pop to folk, soul to country, rap to indie.

I spent my teenage years being miserable and self-conscious and always worried that I was doing or saying something wrong. I don't know for certain why things started to take a turn for the worse around 7th grade, but I think it was the culmination of several factors. The major ones being that I started at a new school, a school which had a posse of really mean girls, and there were suddenly massive amounts of hormones rushing through my body, wreaking havoc on my until then pretty solid core.

As time wore on, things went from bad to worse and I promised that if and when I ever had a daughter I would do everything possible to make sure that she maintained a positive outlook on herself and her life, as well as a level of confidence I was unable to keep.

One of the ways I have tried to prevent my oldest from becoming embarrassed about her body as she gets older, was to introduce the topics of care long before she even needed them. I showed her products I used and explained what they were for, I encouraged her to take responsibility for her own hygiene (which wasn't always successful) and I bought her a book that explained what she could expect. When I noticed, for example, that she was beginning to change and needed deodorant, we took a trip to the store and I let her pick out a fruity, special scent to give her the feeling of having some control over her own body, during what is a pretty chaotic experience.

Unilever deoderants sent me a sample of their pomegranate Dove deodorant and body spray to review...both of which my daughter snatched up as soon as the box was opened. She loves the scent and has used it every day since it arrived in the mail. I cannot comment myself, on the quality, but the simple fact that my daughter has continued to use both products tells me that the it is spot on.

I find it a little odd that even though more than half of the world's population experiences menstruation, it is still a topic that makes for an uncomfortable discussion. Girls are often prepared for this moment in their lives with either a stark version of the science behind it, a hush-hush we don't discuss it attitude or worse, just left on their own to figure things out. But truthfully, they should be empowered by it...after all, that marks their beginning of their transformation into becoming a woman.

I started early, talking to my daughter about her body. I gave her a book that discussed everything she was going to experience as she got older and we used that as a platform for discussion. (On a side note, the book is fabulous, if you want the title send me an email) I know there were things she was afraid to ask or felt uncomfortable talking about, but I think having the book as a base point really helped her feel less insecure. And it gave us a place to start.

The importance of story in my life.

I have heard rave reviews, a million different times and from a million different places, about Donald Miller’s book, A Million Miles in a Thousand Years.

I have been wanting to read it, dig into it's message and truly understand the profound effect it has seemed to have on a large handful of people around me. I have had it in my queue of books to buy for what feels like ages, but the funds just haven't been there to justify purchasing it. I know it doesn't cost a lot, but hey, that's an entire box of diapers around here. And we go through those quickly!

And then, today, I came across this post, where the author puts forth a call to detail the importance of story in life. And in exchange, recieve a copy of the book.

Well, now, I couldn't exactly turn that down.

Story in my life has a profound presence. I have often found myself so completely lost in a particular story, that despite being unhappy with it, I have no idea how to end it. And then suddenly, out of nowhere, someone or something will come along to remind me that if I choose I can turn the page and begin anew. Writing new words, new actions, a new chapter...or an entirely new story altogether

I have taken many paths throughout my life. Some I am proud of, some I am not. But the one thing I have learned through it all is that no matter where I am, I have the power to change what comes next.

This story is mine...mine to tell, mine to live, mine to be.

I take lots and lots of photographs of my children. i have tens of thousands stored on my hard drives. And yet, I have very few printed out. I have ambitious dreams of one day creating books for each of them, but I never have the time to sort through the images to choose which ones I want printed. I started Lydia's album...and I only made it through her first year. She is now 14.

When Mom Central offered a photo book from American Greetings PhotoWorks for me to review, I couldn't resist. They insisted it was easy to use (even easier than before) and so, I figured I would be a wonderful test subject. I was a little disappointed in the gender specific color schemes of their books. I wanted to make a book for the triplets, documenting a little bit of their first two years, but since one was blue and one was pink and I have boy-girl-girl triplets, I opted to go another route and make it for someone else.

That being said, once I got started, it really was easy. The layouts are beautiful, so though you can make changes to the number of photos on each page or the background, I only needed to do that with a few of the pages. You upload the pictures and simply drag and drop them into the spots where you want them to appear on the page. Once you have used a photo, a check mark shows that it is already in the book, so no fumbling to make sure you included all of the photos you wanted!

I cannot wait to get the book + see how it turned out!

To be perfectly honest, I haven't tuned in as much as I would have hoped so far to watch The View. It isn't that the topics or guests don't intrigue me, because honestly some of them really do. It's just time...I don't have (or make) time for television in the morning. Our mornings are a mad rush of breakfast and cleaning and getting dressed and playing and me squeezing in work where I can. And so the television only comes on if it will be spouting one of the triplets' favorite television shows so that I can operate in peace. I would love to watch more of The View, because when I tune in online to catch up on the week's highlights I do like what I see...but the timing, for me, just isn't ideal.

Now...if it were a late night show? I would watch it daily.

As far as this week's line up goes...bits and pieces make me want to tune in and watch. Would love to have caught Mitt Romney this morning, but alas, I missed the airing. Maybe that is one I can catch online. Thursday looks promising too.

I have become quite disenchanted with Hollywood and movies lately, so the Oscars no longer hold the draw for me that they used to. It just isn't the dreamy land full of hope and promise that I once believed in. Everything seems to be packaged too perfectly and too prettily. The movies I do end up loving are the ones that are off the beaten path, maybe a little bit different, but packed full of talent. A lot of the blockbusters may have talent, but it gets so overshadowed by product placement, plugs and, well, the packaging. Plus, we seem to be all too aware of who the front runners for the gold statue are long before the nominees are even announced.

Which, I suppose is the problem I have with a lot of television broadcasts lately...there just isn't much truth out there anymore. It is all a pretty version of what sells. What the marketing and PR and advertising people think we want. Not the truth.

That is one thing that I really like about The View...though sometimes a bit too soft, they do ask the hard questions. Like last week with Nadya Suleman...when she was asked, 'Are you aware that you sound, that people think, you aren't quite all there?' She wasn't pressed to answer, but at least the question was asked.

The show on Thursday also piqued my interest, because I know so many people who are trying (or who had to try) and even if it happened with ease, there is still something about having to try that can take the fun out of trying. I can't wait to hear Guiliana and Bill Rancic's take on the topic.

The View Ambassador Mom...

I was recently selected to be a part of The View Ambassador Mom program. I have to be honest here and admit that I haven't watched The View in ages. I used to watch it, but I just don't typically turn the television on in the morning. When I hear my friends talk about it, though, I wonder if maybe I should give it a second chance. Though I try to provide homemade meals for my children on a daily basis, I am not going to lie and say that I always manage to accomplish that every day. There are some days when we are just to busy for me to find the time to prepare a tasty, well-balanced meal from scratch. And so, on days like those, I turn to prepared foods. Something I can grab and toss in a skillet, the crock pot or the oven with minimal preparation and still enjoy a meal together as a family.

I was recently introduced to Banquet home-style meals and I cannot wait to try them. It took us a while to find them in stores, there is only one in town that carries them. Our store carried three different varieties, but there are so many more! We haven't gotten the chance to try them yet, simply because I gave up meat for lent this year and all of their meals include meat. Celtic Woman | Songs from the Heart

Celtic Woman is a five-member Irish female ensemble whose music puts a modern twist on the Celtic sound. With hits like Sting's 'Fields of Gold' and Billy Joel's 'Goodnight My Angel,' Celtic Woman is all over the Billboard charts and has had seven sold-out US tours. The Cincinnati Enquirer hailed them as 'one of the most wildly popular singing groups on the planet.'

Though it isn't the typical music I listen to (indie, alternative, folk), I still found the music quite beautiful. The woman have beautiful vocal styling and their performance is inspiring. I can only imagine that it is even more so in concert...

They sent me Johnson’s Pink lotion, Head to Toe Wash, Desitin, Johnson’s Gold Shampoo, Oil, Powder and the new Bedtime Bubble Bath. And I have to say...we love them all.

I gifted the Desitin to my niece because we already have several full tubes lying around our house and now that we are (sort of) potty training, we don't use them nearly as often as we used to. But, when the triplets were smaller, we used Desitin at every diaper change. I discovered the benefits of the super power overnight cream too late to be of much use, but that is by far my favorite. And it comes in a purple tube, which Cameron loves (since her favorite color is purple).

I adore the baby oil for myself after a shower for some serious moisturizing and the powder comes in handy to absorb some of the oiliness on days when I don't wash my hair, so I kept those for myself; but the rest of the items went into the triplets bath time stash. The shampoo we use every single bath and it is perfect...it leaves both the girls' (super curly) and James' (stick straight) soft and tangle free, but doesn't weigh it down. The head to toe wash and lotion we use after every single bath because, well, I love the smell. And we got to try out the new bubble bath. Since bubbles at bathtime are a new obsession for the little ones, they were thrilled and the product did not disappoint. The tub was full of bubbles with just a capful and they stuck around as long as it took for the water turned cold. And I am not sure if it was all the fun in the tub or because of the aromatherapy properties of its scent, but I swear they went to sleep much easier than usual.

One of my favorite gifts to give at baby showers is a themed basket full of Johnson's baby soap and lotion, washcloths, a towel (maybe even monogrammed) and bath toys. It is one of those gifts that fits a new mother's needs perfectly and can be used for years to come!

Oxi-Clean - New Products!

I was recently given the opportunity to try out some new stain fighting products from Oxi-Clean. They are so new, in fact, that they won't even be hitting the shelves until mid-February.

First up was the OxiClean Max Force Gel Stick Pre-Treater.

It is similar to the other brand's gel sticks with a brush, but this one has little nubs instead to get down deep and loosen the stain. It was a little bit awkward to use because you cannot really determine how much gel will come out, but overall it was not complicated to pre-treat any of the stains. I say pre-treat lightly, because most of the stains I treat have been sitting for quite some time and only get treated right before being tossed into the wash.

Next, was the OxiClean Max Force Power Paks.

These are little plastic paks that come with a pre-measured amount of stain fighting powder vacuum sealed inside. You just toss one in the wash and viola...cloths are cleaner than without having included it in the cycle. The only complaint that I had about these, were that there were a number of packs that had holes or had burst open. Other than that, they are really (really, really) easy to use.

l admit that I was a little bit skeptical about the kind of results I was going to get. I have used Oxi-Clean before with varied results...and it usually doesn't do enough to remove the kinds of stains we have around here. But, the combination of the pre-treater and the paks worked wonders on days old pizza sauce and cheese sauce stains on my little girls' shirts. And now...I can't wait to wash a few more loads and see what other stains I can make disappear!

Neosporin Lip Health 3-Day Challenge

I am a frequent user of lip balm. During the summer, my lips are dry and cracked. During the winter my lips are dry and cracked. And though they are better during the spring and fall, they are still dry and cracked more often than not. Unless...I constantly apply lip balm.

I have tried several, and though there are a few that I do like quite a bit, I have never really settled on a good all purpose combination of balms that help soothe my lips. I have tried glossy ones, natural ones, camphor ones, exfoliating ones...but none fit my entire range of lip needs.

That is, until I accepted the Neosporin Lip Health 3-Day Challenge.

For 3 days, I was asked to use the daily hydration therapy during the day

and the overnight renewal therapy at night.

And I am thrilled to say that I wasn't disappointed in the results. At the end of the 3 days, my lips were no longer dry and cracked, but smooth and silky. Though I typically use lip balms morning, noon and night; it never occurred to me before now to have a separate product for nighttime. I think that the extra nourishment and moisture throughout the night really is what made the ultimate difference.

The only complaint that I have, is that the containers are way too small. Since I always carry lip balm around with me, I also frequently lose it. And these were a bit on the small side, which at times made them difficult to uncover in their various hiding places (pockets, purses, underneath the bed...). Other than that, I think I found my newest favorite product!

Tell me a little bit about yourself...where you are from, your family, etc...
From Ohio, now live in VA. Our move (August) was due to my husband enrolling in Seminary. Our plans are not set as we would like to explore our options and hope to be involved in ministry as missionaries, counselors, or my husband becoming a Seminary professor. We (Phillip and I) have been married for 11 years (98) and have Emily who is 14 months. Emily was a surprise, as we had a difficult time conceiving her and did not think it was a possibility!

What or who inspires you?
Christ inspires me. I believe he is the ultimate example of sacrifice and love. I want to run my business this way, by being kind, generous and loving.

How did you + your husband meet?
On the campus of Bowling Green State Univ in Ohio. My freshman year as a nursing student and his senior year as a Spec. Education major, that was fall 1996. We actually met via chat, which was only open to BGSU students...we chated on the computer for a while then he took me out to dinner and the rest is history.

I am fascinated with names and the stories that are often behind them. Why did you and your husband choose the name Emily for your daughter?
Well we did not know what we were having and thought she was a boy because that is what everyone said...! So, we had other names picked out for her and a week or so before she was born, there was a magazine that came in the mail where you could order all sorts of personalized items for children. One of the items was a pretty red dress with the name Emile...my husband said "A-mielle?" who would name their daughter that? I said, "No it is another way to spell Emily." He said "I really like Emily" I thought about it and thought I did too, and we decided that it was a name we could add to the girl list. When she was born we were not sure, but then he made phone calls and announced her as "Emily Ann" and then it stuck...Ann is the traditional middle name in our family (both sides) for girls.

If you weren't doing this, what is something else you would love to do?
Well, right now, I market these really great products from Danielson Designs...however, what I would love to do is make my own product! Just do not know what it will be yet. My goal is to earn enough money to help out with our monthly bills and invest any extra into something I can make myself so I do not have to go into debt/take a financial risk on making something that might be a flop. And if business just is not for me, I am happy staying at home with 'lil Emily and making our home a sweet place.

Toyinfo.org is an interactive website full of tips needed to choose the right toys for each child on your holiday gift list this year. There are free downloadable play guides, as well as information on toy safety facts and recall information. The site also features discussion boards, providing an engaging and informative one stop resource for discover everything about toys and play.

Toyawards.org showcases the top toys nominated for the 2010 Toy of the Year Awards (TOTY). It showcases 82 toys that have been nominated for the prestigious awards. Clorox Green Works

I adore Clorox Green Works all purpose cleaner for one very simple reason.

It works.

There have been a long list of green products that have marched through my house + to be completely honest with you I was disappointed by most of them. So, even though I really wanted to, I hated spending the extra money on something green. One day, I found a bottle of the all purpose cleaner on sale, so I bought it. And I loved it.

When I had the chance to try out Clorox Green Works' newest line of laundry products, naturally (haha, get it....) I jumped at the chance. I was excited about testing out their newest products, but I was still afraid I would be disappointed in their cleaning power so I hesitated on using them. I wash all of our clothes in cold water (not by choice, but because our washing machine decided there is no other way to do so) and there aren't many detergents or stain removers that I have tried that work well on stains. But then today, Cameron spilled a giant cup of coffee down the leg of her pajama pants (don't ask) + I thought, why not give the stain remover + laundry detergent a shot.

And they worked. Beautifully.

The clothes came out smelling wonderfully fresh + looking perfectly clean. Which, with three toddlers in the house, is no small feat.

Sesame Street + K'NEX

Team Mom and K'NEX recently sent us a couple of fun things to try out...

First up was the Ice Cream Truck Building Set from the Sesame Street Neighborhood Collection.

There are several individual collections that coordinate, working together to create an entire neighborhood, but each collection also works well on its own. The pieces are big + chunky, to make it easy for little fingers to handle and it was created to specifically provide several developmental benefits, including cognitive development through problem-solving skills. The Peaches adore it and constantly fight over Elmo, although they don't quite understand yet how to fit the pieces together to create the actual ice cream truck they have a lot of fun asking me to do it for them.

Developed for ages 2-5, it (and the other three sets) is available for $9.99 at Target, Wal-Mart and Toys R Us.

We also received a 400 piece tub of K'NEX.

This is such a great value, offering building ideas for 20 different models (plus the tools to use your imagination to create many more). I think one of the neatest things about K'NEX is that they work with several other brands of building blocks. And, having the storage tub, makes for easy clean-up! The Peaches are definitely too young for this toy, but they did have fun using the different parts in creative ways...such as drumsticks (for the tub, which became a drum) + cymbals (the wheels).

Five for Fighting: Slice

Singer/songwriter John Ondrasik has spent the past decade writing deeply personal songs that include social messages, invoke the human spirit and make an emotional connection. This can be heard on the past five albums by Five For Fighting, the band name under which he records and performs.

I think we all know that communication is a pretty important aspect to having a happy + healthy relationship. But...keeping the lines of communication completely open is not always easy. Especially as a parent.

And for me {you know, with the three 2 year olds and the one 13 year old} communication can be, well...challenging. On a good day.

Of particular concern, is trying to retain the open + honest relationship with my 13 year old daughter that we established when she was quite young, while still allowing her the freedom + space to have her 'secrets'. I want her to feel comfortable enough to come to me + discuss any issues that arise {also, share with me the good news} without overstepping those boundaries that allow her to grow + bloom into a young woman who is well-prepared for adulthood.

I have discovered that sometimes she needs gentle encouragement to share her thoughts + feelings, but other times I need to push a bit harder to get her to open up. In fact, sometimes I need to forcefully shove her right out of that dark hole that teenagers are so apt to climb into, in order to blast open the supposedly closed lines of communication.

And the one thing that {so far} seems to help the most, is to just keep trying. No matter how much she shuts me out, no matter how hard she tries to ignore me; I have learned that if I keep at it, she will likely open up + communicate. Eventually.

I make sure to take at least a few moments out of each day to ask how her day was + to really listen to what she is saying when she answers. We text frequently throughout our busy days, just to check in + touch base. I ask questions constantly, phrasing things in different ways until I find the one she will answer. I make her call + check in when she is at sporting events we couldn't attend or with her friends.

In short...I do everything I can to try to stay in touch + keep in tune with what is going on in her life, her heart, her mind.

It is an ongoing process...sometimes I fail miserably for weeks {or months} at a time. But, persistence + patience usually allows us, she + I, to find our way back to open + honest communication. I know that we will continue to encounter roadblocks along the way, but I think that my willingness to keep trying until I find something that works will hopefully help us to keep the lines open.

A. Tierney has a huge selection of items that you just won't find in stores {unless you are lucky enough to live near a store that carries their products, sadly I do not but you can see if you do here!}. They have a wide variety of belts, hats + headbands for little ones that are just darling + these beautiful enamel bangles for women that I imagine are quite fun to wear.

Here is where I would post the pictures of the adorable Peaches in their personalized hats if they would sit still long enough for me to take them. Instead, they run around like little mad people, gleefully taking the hats off + putting them back on 'self'. Happy as clams to have their very own hats, but not happy as clams to have Mommy take {'no, no'} more pictures.

So instead, you get pictures of the hats...

Which, by the way, are absolutely adorable. They just would have looked cuter perched atop some Peaches' noggins, especially with their names monogrammed on the side. But sometimes improvisation is necessary...no?
